How to Post-treat and Sinter Ceramic Materials

Ceramic materials are widely used in electronics, aerospace, biomedicine and other fields because of their excellent high-temperature strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and good electrical insulation. In the preparation of ceramic materials, sintering, as a key post-treatment process, directly affects the performance and quality of the final product. This paper will discuss the basic principle, common methods and their effects on the properties of ceramic materials.

First, the basic principle of sintering

Sintering means that the molded ceramic green body is heated at high temperature, and the particles are combined through the mechanisms of substance diffusion and plastic flow, so that the porosity is reduced and the density is increased, thereby enhancing the mechanical strength and functional properties of the material. This process is usually carried out at a temperature below the melting point of the material, which belongs to solid or liquid phase sintering process.

Second, the common sintering method

1. Conventional Sintering.
This is the most traditional sintering method, in which the ceramic blank is placed in a high-temperature furnace, heated to the required temperature in the atmospheric environment and kept for a certain time. Its advantages are simple equipment and low cost, but there are some problems such as high sintering temperature, long time and limited density.

2. Hot Pressing, HP)
Pressure is applied at high temperature to promote particle rearrangement and densification, which is suitable for high-hardness ceramics such as Si3N4 and AlN which are difficult to sinter. This method can significantly improve the density and mechanical properties of materials, but the equipment cost is high and usually only products with simple shapes can be prepared.

3. Spark Plasma Sintering, SPS)
The plasma generated by pulse current is used for heating, which has the advantages of fast heating speed and short sintering time, and is suitable for rapid densification of advanced materials such as nano-ceramics and composite ceramics, and can effectively inhibit grain growth.

4. Microwave Sintering
Using microwave energy to directly heat the interior of the material can realize uniform and rapid temperature rise, which is helpful to obtain fine grain structure and uniform structure, and at the same time, it is energy-saving and efficient. Suitable for ceramic systems with specific dielectric properties.

Third, the influence of sintering parameters on the properties of ceramics

1. Sintering temperature and time
The higher the sintering temperature and the longer the sintering time, the greater the density, but too high a temperature may lead to grain coarsening, pore regeneration and even material deformation.

2. Atmosphere control
The atmosphere (air, nitrogen, argon, reducing atmosphere, etc.) in the sintering process has an important influence on the chemical stability and surface state of materials, especially when preparing functional ceramics such as piezoelectric ceramics and conductive ceramics.

3. Use of additives
Adding a small amount of sintering AIDS (such as magnesium oxide, yttrium oxide, etc.) can reduce sintering temperature, promote densification and improve microstructure and properties.

IV. Conclusion

The post-treatment sintering process of ceramic materials is the key link to determine its final properties. With the development of advanced ceramic materials, sintering technology is also progressing, from traditional sintering to rapid, energy-saving and precise development. In the future, the combination of new sintering technology and intelligent control means will further improve the level of functionalization and high performance of ceramic materials and provide more possibilities for high-tech fields.
