How to improve the temperature resistance of PC materials

Polycarbonate (PC) is a kind of engineering plastic with excellent performance, which has high transparency, good impact resistance and excellent mechanical strength, and is widely used in electronic appliances, automobiles, buildings, medical devices and other fields. However, the use of PC materials in high temperature environment is limited, especially in long-term high temperature conditions, which are prone to thermal aging, yellowing, strength decline and other problems. Therefore, improving the temperature resistance of PC materials has become an important research direction in the field of materials science and engineering.

Firstly, the temperature resistance of PC can be improved by chemical modification. Introducing groups with higher heat resistance into the molecular chain of polycarbonate, such as aromatic structure, sulfone group and amide group, can effectively improve its thermal stability. For example, blending polycarbonate with polysulfone (PSU), polyethersulfone (PES) and other materials to form blended gold can not only maintain the excellent transparency of PC, but also significantly improve its heat-resistant temperature. In addition, a new polycarbonate with higher glass transition temperature (Tg) can be synthesized by replacing traditional bisphenol A with heat-resistant bisphenol monomers (such as bisphenol Z and bisphenol AP).

Secondly, physical modification is one of the effective means to improve the temperature resistance of PC. By adding heat-resistant fillers, such as glass fiber, carbon fiber and nano-clay, the dimensional stability and heat resistance of PC materials can be significantly improved. For example, adding proper amount of nano-alumina or silicon dioxide can not only enhance the thermal conductivity of the material, but also form an effective thermal barrier, thus delaying the damage of heat to the material body. In addition, adding flame retardant and antioxidant to PC can also help to delay the oxidative degradation process at high temperature.

Furthermore, the optimization of processing technology is also an important way to improve the temperature resistance of PC. In the process of injection molding or extrusion, controlling the appropriate processing temperature and cooling rate is helpful to reduce the residual stress inside the material and improve its thermal deformation temperature. In addition, the multi-stage cooling process or annealing treatment technology can effectively eliminate internal stress, improve the crystal orientation of the material and further enhance its heat resistance.

Finally, with the development of science and technology, some new modification technologies and composite design ideas have appeared in recent years. For example, PC-based nanocomposites prepared by in-situ polymerization or functional PC products with specific structures prepared by 3D printing technology can optimize their temperature resistance at the microstructure level.

To sum up, the methods to improve the temperature resistance of PC materials mainly include chemical structure modification, physical filling modification, process optimization and new material design. Through the comprehensive application of these methods, the stable application of PC materials in high-temperature environment can be realized, and its application prospects in high-end fields such as aerospace, new energy vehicles and high-temperature optical devices can be broadened.
