How to dye 3D printed parts?

With the continuous development of 3D printing technology, more and more individuals and enterprises begin to use 3D printers to manufacture various personalized products. However, many printed models are often single in color, which can not meet the aesthetic needs of users or specific purposes. Therefore, post-dyeing 3D printed parts has become an important means to improve their visual effects. This paper will introduce several common and practical dyeing methods of 3D printed parts, and provide some precautions to help enthusiasts finish their works better.

I. Selection of Applicable Materials

Not all 3D printed materials are suitable for dyeing. Common dyeable materials include PLA (polylactic acid), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and nylon. Among them, PLA is the most commonly used 3D printing consumables with good dyeing performance; ABS can also be dyed, but it usually needs higher temperature and stronger chemical treatment. Nylon, on the other hand, is an ideal material for dyeing because of its porous structure, which is easier to absorb dyes.

Second, common dyeing methods

1. Staining with edible pigment
This is a method suitable for beginners. After mixing the edible pigment with hot water, put the printed matter into the solution and soak it by heating. After waiting for a certain time, take it out, clean it and dry it. This method has low cost and simple operation, but the color persistence is poor, so it is suitable for non-long-term display models.

2. Professional plastic dyes (such as RIT dyes)
RIT is an industrial dye specially used for dyeing fabrics and plastics, and its effect is more lasting. The operation mode is similar to that of edible pigment: the dye is mixed with water in proportion, heated to a proper temperature, put into the printed piece, and continuously stirred to ensure uniform color. This method has bright dyeing effect, but attention should be paid to ventilation and protection.

3. Brush with propylene pigment
For models that need local coloring or fine treatment, acrylic pigments can be used for manual painting. This method is more flexible and can achieve multi-color matching and gradient effect, but it requires certain operation skills, and the coating may affect the surface texture of the model.

Step 4: Spray paint treatment
It is an ideal way to obtain uniform color and high gloss by spraying the model with a spray gun or a spray can. There are many kinds of spray paint, such as matt, bright surface, metallic texture, etc., which can be selected according to demand. However, the model should be cleaned and polished before painting and operated in a well-ventilated environment.

Third, preparation before dyeing

In order to obtain a better dyeing effect, it is suggested to carry out the following treatment on 3D printed parts before dyeing:

-Cleaning and degreasing: Wipe the model surface with warm soapy water or alcohol to remove grease or dust that may be attached during printing.
-Grinding and polishing: Use sandpaper or grinding tools to remove lamination and burr, which makes the surface smoother and helps to improve the adhesion and uniformity of dyeing.
-preheating treatment (suitable for ABS and other materials): slightly heating the model before dyeing will help it absorb dyes better.

Fourth, matters needing attention

-Wear gloves, masks and other protective equipment during dyeing to avoid dye contact with skin or inhalation of harmful gases.
-After dyeing, the model should be cleaned in time to remove residual dyes to prevent color pollution or discoloration.
-Different materials have different dye absorption capacity, so it is recommended to test with waste parts at the first attempt.

tag

Through reasonable dyeing process, 3D printed parts can not only obtain richer color expression, but also enhance the overall texture and artistic value. Whether it is used for exhibition, education or practical products, dyeing treatment is a link that cannot be ignored. Mastering scientific methods and skills will help to give full play to the creativity of 3D printing and create more exquisite and personalized works.
